Fly off report in Judging Order:

1.      Joe Bob Stuka  Waxhaw North Carolina.

19.05.02  7.45 PM   weather : really good.

Score : 6 8 7 5 6 5 5  6 6 // 7 5 7 8 6 5 // 6 6 5 // 8 8 5 5 .

Score divided in four sections of 5 minutes to indicate the work rate. 19 birds.

R.140.  Q.1.4.  D.1.4.  Total  274.4.

Pigeons started really nice, frequent and nice quality in the first 5 min. Later the kit often split up or a few birds left the kit, so they scored a lot less. No fly pattern, just trying to stay together above the loft. Saw about 6 real nice quality pigeons.

2.      Bobby Bradley Nashville Tennessee.

21.05.02    07.00 AM  weather : nice calm.

Score : 5 5 5 5 // 5 5 // - // -

R.30   Q.1   D.1   Total 30.

20 birds. Time flown 15 min. 45 sec.

Kit flew on nice height, but the birds didn’t work together, no activity, only 6 just scorable breaks seen, sad for Bobby. Don’t use all your luck to qualify, safe some for the finals!

3.      Bob Westfall

R.30   Q.1.0   D.1.6   Total 30.

20 birds.  Time flown 20 min.

Birds flew pretty good in the wind but only scored 6 breaks just scorable.

20 birds. Time flown 20 min.

Birds flew to a good height and started working real nice, but after about 5 min. The kit started to dive and fly nervous around the huge pine trees and only scored a few more breaks. Some birds in the kit with better  quality and depth than scored.

5.      Aubrey Thibodeaux Louisiana.

Birds flew a bit too high for a really good view. They scored a few breaks, but quality

And depth was just scorable no more. Hopefully more luck for the guys in Louisiana

       next year!

A perfect timing of releasing the kit, this seemed very important for Kevin and he was probably right. The kit started scoring beautiful breaks with good quality and depth, less frequent halfway the fly, but at the end again some really nice breaks. A constant performance what means, good quality pigeons, nice team.

Fantastic to judge a kit like this with a lot of fanciers in the yard.

First part very active,  kitting was often too loose what cost him bigger breaks. A few  not reliable kitters made him miss a few beautiful half turns extra! Beautiful kit to judge! Best working quality kit I saw. Kit only active in the first part, but quality of breaks just scorable, lot of birds poor  quality and not scorable, the kit wasn’t ready. Kit landed just after 15 min. what saved the score.

Due to the fog a what difficult start, but the kit started working and scored 7 breaks first  5 min. but was less active the rest of the fly. Overall quality was poor, just scorable only a few better quality breaks.

The kit flew low and often a little too far away, so he missed some breaks behind the trees. Kit was very active, quality often too loose, but in some bigger breaks better quality and tighter birds, depth was nice. I wonder what this kit would have done in perfect weather conditions.

Birds out and after 2 min. they settle down and time in. They start scoring nice with good quality and depth, very active, but only small breaks and too many individual working birds, they didn’t wait for each other. Later some bigger breaks with nice quality and depth. After 10 min. less active and a few birds leave the kit and almost ruined the fly, it looked as if they were going to land, but they went back to the kit and in last 5 min. kit scores again some nice breaks, lucky Ferid! Beautiful fly!

Beautiful entertaining active kit, flew perfect in sight. A lot of the small breaks, poor quality, just scorable. Kit lost discipline a few times and started flying too fast and changing wings. When concentrated again they started scoring and showed in the bigger breaks a lot better quality.

The kit started beautiful with 11 breaks and 4 half turns in the first 5 min.! We were exited but the kit was quiet after 5 min. and just refused to give us more big breaks, they thought it was enough. A nice quality end depth in the breaks. After 5 min. the kit lost concentration and discipline and to much individual work was the result. A good score for about 5 min. really good work!

Kit starts quiet, but was ready after 5 min. in the fly and showed us some really beautiful perfect breaks above the loft. By far the best quality breaks I’ve seen in this competition! Strange was that the breaks away from the loft, same kit same pigeons, were of poor quality. A few times the kit lost concentration, discipline and was spread out over the sky for a few moments and later came together again. Some out birds a few times.

Birds in the air and the kit scores some average quality breaks and then 3 min. in the fly a falcon attacks the kit and takes one, another bird gets out of the kit and lands. The kit gets together again and even starts scoring again, but they decide to land all, after 13 min. Some decent rollers but  still a lot with faults in roll style. I hope more luck for Peter next time!

Birds flew nice height, but kitting wasn’t good. Kit stays active all the time, most birds to soft in the roll and need some more depth. Better kitting will probably cause more energy in the breaks.

The kit flies fast and disappears and we saw them again after 30 min. so sad enough no score! Birds were attacked a lot lately by the falcons what probably caused this behavior!

Kit goes to a nice height and starts working, lack of speed and depth in the breaks.

A few bigger breaks with extra quality but average was to soft in the roll, lack of velocity often not clean in the roll. Birds need more power, explosive energy in the breaks.

Kit released but they seemed not happy that they had to fly, it takes several min. for them to reach a nice height then time in called. The kit starts working nice with good breaks of average quality and depth. Breaks at end of fly were lesser quality what hurt the average quality multiplier again. Almost seemed that they wanted to land before 15 min. but fortunately they flew the time.

Heine Bijker judging World Cup Roller Fly 2002.

A little nervous to do it again, but really glad that I could do it and meet a lot of friends again.

This judging of Birmingham rollers all over the World is the most beautiful thing to win in our hobby, so go for it! After two months of traveling I came home as fit as the day when I left, unbelievable but the enthusiasm of all those people I met, gave me lots of energy, excellent hosts everywhere!

I think that the overall quality of the kits I saw in America was better than two years ago, but what I still missed in a lot of the kits was the fig 8 fly pattern what a kit needs for a good setup to break together. When a kit is used to fly fig 8 pattern, then birds that break from the kit, know when they get out of the roll, where the kit is so they get out off the roll faced in the right direction. A lot of kits I saw just flew straight above the loft, with no particularly direction. After a break there was a lot of confusion because the birds came out of the roll in all different directions, because they don’t know where the rest of the kit is. This lack of fly pattern also causes the often splitting of the kits and a lot more of the kitting problems.

Only tight kitting gives the big simultaneous breaks we want, and everywhere I was, I saw a lot better quality in the bigger breaks!

Meeting Monty’s family in Canada again was really special to me.

To meet the people in the regions I couldn’t visit two years ago was something special too, I really looked forward to meet the fanciers there, with a lot of well-known names. I was very glad to complete the entire trip around America this time!

In Holland it was windy, but Henk’s kit put up a nice show, we were satisfied seen the circumstances.

Denmark was a pleasant surprise; Ferid put up a nice good working kit with a beautiful result!

In England we had terrible weather, rain and wind, but fortunately for the flyers when they had to fly the weather was good. I saw beautiful breaks. Disappointing that I couldn’t visit a lot more fanciers in this Birmingham Roller country with lots of good flyers.

South Africa has a lot of crazy keen fanciers; I had a beautiful time over there, a lot of fun and saw a few really nice kits. The potential to win the World Cup is there! Most beautiful quality break on my entire trip I saw in South Africa!

Australia the new region! In Australia every fancier wanted to know how are our birds compared to the rest of the world? I think there is a lot of work to do for the Australian fanciers, but what I saw is that they really work hard to improve. I was surprised about the numbers of peregrine falcons attacking the kits almost everywhere, a huge handicap to improve your family of birds. I did see some nice working kits, but not a few outstanding birds to enjoy and to compare with the rest. The kitting was often a problem too.

In Australia they don’t have the same opportunities to get the birds they want to work with as in the rest of the world. A lot of the fanciers work together so they will improve their quality as fast as possible. I had a wonderful time down under and sure will be back some day to see the result of their enthusiast work to improve the quality of their birds.

I want to thank all those people who picked me up from the airports and drove me around; they are the fanciers we need to keep competitions like this alive. Guil Rand our G.C. made a perfect schedule for me, I had no problems at all on the entire trip and there were I believe about 35 flights. And thank you very much Dennis Hayes, for creating a website with the results so everybody could follow it on Internet. We need an own World Cup website [ I hope Dennis is already working on it!], so all the news and results can be seen on Internet all the time and especially during the judging trip.

All the best for everybody in this fantastic hobby and please keep supporting this World Cup Roller Fly, because it’s the most beautiful competition to fly in and it brings fanciers together from all over the world, to compare their birds, read and communicate about it.

Hope to meet a lot of you people again either at your or my place!

Heine Bijker and family.
