We started bright and early the sun was out and had the makings of a good day first to fly was Scott Campbell. His birds went up and it look good till they started to lift, and did they lift he scored 2 breaks on the way up , and that was it , they just flew on one wing for the rest of the time  final score was 32.5 we seen some nice birds in the kit just never work together.

Next to fly was Roy Edmonds, I was looking forward to Roy's as I knew he had done well with his birds before but we just got the same thing as we seen at Scott's they when high so fast and never got a chance to score them so no score for Roy , Sorry Roy.

Then on to Jose Rivar had coffee and donuts then got his kit out. In this kit there was some nice individual birds but they was still tending to go high but enjoy the birds all the same with a final score of 15.6

On to Kevin Naylor, his kit flew stiff and fast and again was to high and on one wing hence there was no score( but he was near a dairy farm and breed shit loads of fly's ) joke Kevin better luck next time

This took us to the end of the first day and we met some nice people along the way. Sunday the 1st of April we was all hoping for a better day again the sun was out and it was a nice day off we went to (Roy Edmonds) second team. But again the birds lifted and was on one wing  hence he scored 5 points.

Back to  Scott Campbell's to fly his second team again much the same as before flying high and on one wing but did manage to score 16.5

Off to Jack Meyers to fly his team on release one bird refused to go so we was off to a bad start but the kit held its height but was still going on one wing but did manage to score 10 points.

Then on to Bayani Banaal, up went the birds and again the same thing as before the birds were going on one wing but as all the other kits there was one or two nice birds in the team and finished with a score of 12.1. This ended the second day so we all went for a bite to eat and had a chat, thanks for the meal Bayani.

The 2nd /05/ 04 up at I think it was 3 am for a 3 hour drive to John Lewis. His birds went up and to no surprise did the same on one wing and flying fast never really did much at all again no score sorry john hope you do better next year.

Off to Joe Emberton, Joe put the birds up and they lifted he scored 13.2 but because of out birds he mist 2 breaks of 5 this may have put him in second place but Joe assured me that the birds never normally left the kit.

Off to Jim Bakkers,  he put the birds up but again a no score  by this time I think we all thought the same thing that the weather  was some thing to do with the way the birds was flying.
Arrived at Aris Punla,  again the same as all the other kits they lifted and was seldom on work but he did manage to score  5 points.

Off to Ruben Melendez, this kit did put a little work in but did not work as a team there for there was no score.( but one of the little buggers was a good shot with the shit because it got me on the head lol) Ruben got us something to eat before we moved on to the next one thanks Ruben.

On to Henry Davis, Henrys birds did score a 5 but I think he needs to work on the kit to get it better keep trying Henry

Off to Sid Love, this kit started well  but was very fast to get high some nice birds in it all the same he scored 7.8.

Then to the home of Joe Martinez, up the birds went but was flying very fast and low on one wing they did get up but soon came down 2 birds down and a d/q sorry Joe nice place and the trike was nice hope your wife enjoys it.

On to Bill Washington, Bill had 2 birds down in 5 minutes sorry Bill did see some good birds in this kit but he was d/q.

Back to Jim Bakker's this kit did better for Jim but as the rest flew on one wing so did this kit but some nice birds all the same and he took second place with a score of 16.9.
Back to John lewis, John had no luck at all on this day his second kit landed and he was d/q.
Back to fly Joe Emberton's second kit. He had 2 birds down in 16 minutes but did manage to get 5 points better luck next year Joe.

We stopped at Joe's for the night and we all went for a meal, it was a very nice night with some good friends that we met here in the USA.

Well the last day and one kit to go we had a nice drive to  Richard Nafzear. He lives in a real stunning place , we had a chat the he put the birds out. But he had 3 birds out the kit all the time and we was unable to score his kit but the was some nice birds in what we seen.

the above had no score
  the above was d/q

Please note that the scores on this fly was nothing to do with the quality. Of the bird I was watching , but more to do with the change in weather conditions, at some points it was reaching 97 degrees and it show on the birds the last time I saw this sort of thing was on the all off England fly 3 years ago we went 3 to 4 days with every kit doing the same thing as this, then the weather changed and we saw some different kits working . I'm disappointed that I never saw the full potential of the kits here in the states but I'm pleased I met the flyers her as they made me feel at home.
Id also like to thank Scott and Tammy for there hospitality and for showing use all the different places in your country thanks Scott and Tammy. Hope we can all get together again some time. yours Dave Moseley

Southeast Regional Judge John Castro

After some time away and recovery time I was again on the road with Regional Director, Don Simpson. It was great to be alive. To be in a wheelchair and still be able to judge again was a real shot in the gut. We left Anderson, South Carolina for Virginia on Friday with great expectations. By the way you may wonder why this is type written in caps. Well let me explain that my stroke took away the use of my left arm as my left side is in the recovery stage and I an doing the best I can with one finger (this report was re-typed by Steve Clayton, the original was all capital letters).

We spent the night at Fred and Roxane Bennett’s home. After a good rest and great breakfast at the Bennet’s home we went out to judge the kit. This kit flew 7.51 minutes. There were two birds out of the kit the whole time. DQ

Donnie Cox flew next at 8:50. Mr. Cox had a kit of 15 birds. One bird flew out much of the time, therefore only seven breaks counted. Q-1.0  D-1.0   Score: 36

Elmore Wade was next to fly at 10am in the morning. He flew 20 birds that flew the time but got wond blown the entire fly time. Most of the time they were out of sight.  Q-1.3  D-1.2  Score: 23.4

We then went to Wayne Yates’ home to fly his and Rocky’s birds. Sorry I don’t have Rocky’s last name but Rocky had been kind enough to feed everyone at his bachlor pad. By now the crowd had certainly increased. Free food and you may have many friends. Wayne flew a 20 bird kit. The birds flew well at a good height. It was breezy but nice. This kit had 16 breaks for the lead. The kit showed excellent kitting, good chemistry but frequently flew behind the trees. Q-1.1 D1.1  Score:101.64

Following this kit, we went to fly Tyrone Seabron fly his birds. Tyrone only had 15 birds to fly. He turned his team out and two birds flew lower than the kit. They scored one time but flew 18.10 minutes. Q-1.0  D-1.0  Score: 5

Now it was time for Don and I to head to North Carolina. We expressed our thanks and good byes and hit the road again. Very nice group of guys in Virginia. Joe Barnes wwas scheduled to fly but he had some family illness come up. Don and I found Wendle Carter’s lofts and told him we would be there at 7am to judge his kit of rollers. Right on time we drove in his driveway. Sad to say Wendle did his part but his birds were not ready for this competition. The birds flew 20 minutes but did not score a turn.

The young buck of North Carolina, Jay Yandle flew at 8am. Sharp and the kit responded well. He flew 20 birds and they had 11 good turns. This young man will be tough in the near future. The birds flew 20 minutes. Q-1.3  D-1.3  Score: 103.09 and the lead in the region.

At 9:30am Toby Brady put up a pretty good kit of 20 birds. This kit had 14 turns and were flying well until they got tired and hot. Sad to say as good as they did, they were a DQ in 14:08 minutes. They would have been in the lead as they had scored enough at the time. DQ

We arrived around 1pm and at 1:15 the best in the sport, Greg Truesdale, put his tired kit in the air. Greg had flown in the burn off on Saturday and agreed to fly in the World Cup Fly on Sunday. He put up 19 birds and hoped for the best. Greg’s kit had two birds out from the get go but the kit was DQ in 11:13 minutes flown. The kit had a two minute time out. Sorry to see that happen to a good sport like Greg Truesdale.

O J Hood was scheduled to fly but the hawks had culled his kit down bad and he was unable to fly. Sorry OJ, I was looking forward to seeing your birds in the air.

Joe Bob Stuka was ready to fly. He knew he would have to fly in the heat and he put his 20 bird “A” team in the sky. The birds went up, up and away. At the 18:52 mark he put up his “B” kit and gave up his low score. This kit did well for themselves although they were not judged.

3:30pm was not the best draw that same day we arrived back in Anderson at the Simpson loft. At 7:30pm and wanting to see his own birds fly, Don put up his “A” kit in the sky. Much to our surprise we saw turn after turn. I stood there with my mouth wide open. After 20 minutes the kit landed and went in. Don then took a chance and let out the “B” kit. This kit went up and began to turn even more than the first kit. I watched as Don had 14, 15, 16, 17, and 18 bird turns. Boy were we surprized, or at least I was. The best I ever seen at Don’s loft. I had to thank him for allowing me to wotness those hot birds.

Friday evening Don said I could judge his kits. Bobby Bradley was ther from Tennessee. My son Shayne, went with me to be timekeeper for me and witness what I would see. Don flew the first kit at 7:23pm and they flew just 15:01. I couldn’t believe this was the same kit I had seen Sunday evening. This kit hjad 11 turns but only one would be a 17 bird turn. Q-1.3  D-1.4  Score: 211.12, Good for the new lead. It was time for the second kit to fly. It was 8:03pm and time was getting short. This was the real hot kit I had seen before and I anticipated a real active kit. Much to my surprise again there were only 9 turns in 16:41. He would get Q-1.4  D-1.5  Score: 121.8, Good for second place.

We headed for North Carolina again Saturday morning. This time we headed for the mountains with Bobby Bradley driving. The first to fly here would be the owner of the fish farm, William Cable. At 2:15pm Mr. Cable put up his 20 bird kit. The wind picked up but the birds were barely aware. They had only 6 good turns but one was 16 birds. They flew 15:32 in all. Q-1.2  D-1.4  Score 113.32 and very good for the time they flew.

Next to fly would be Clay Hoyle’s son, Sandy Hoyle. Sandy flew 19 birds and they flew the 20 minutes. Q-1.0  D-1.0  Two turns for the score: 10

Last but not least to fly was Clay Hoyle. At 7:35pm he put up a kit of 20 birds. I counted 27 turns. One of 10 birds and one of 15 of 20 birds. What else can I say? The kit spoke for itself. Joe Bob Stuka was the timekeeper. Q1.3  D1.3  The winning score: 303.35

New England Regional Judge John Antonelli

First and foremost I would like to thank everyone concerned for their gracious hospitality and Brotherhood In making this World Cup An experience I will always cherish,, The weather was excellant for flying rollers and I saw some excelant kits and Kits that experienced some bad luck,, But this Is expected In this elusive sport we call rollers,, Everything went smooth from start to finish,, We all had some good laugh,s, good food,,and talked rollers,, I would like to thank,, Joe Testa, Mark Thompson and James Spring for their dedication in making this happen, I believe that the people  I met, and the total experience of this fly should be experienced by an endeaver such as this, I made some lasting friendships and sparked some old ones.  Also a special thanks to Diana Testa for the best italian cuisine ( Thanks Mom) And my buddy  Dave Szabatrua for traveling all the way to New England  just to help out as well as hang out with "The Crew".

Lenny Vialpando, Jason Brown, Jay Starley, Guil Rand and the rest of the flyers were outstanding hosts who made it fun to be around and not just a fly.  Saw some top notch birds and Jay Starley's kit was an outstanding example of the level we all need to strive and take our birds.  Jay's kit was the highest Q and D kit I have witnessed anywhere in the world-they were right and gave it all, and Jay prepped them like a master.  All who witnessed this kit, saw one of the best kits in the world for Q and D-no wing visible in the spin and many in the 40'-60'.  That picture should stick with you all to never be satisfied until your birds hit this level.  Thanks to all.

The New Tri State region was the result of Eric Fischer from Philadelphia PA. and his persistence in bringing  the World Cup to his area,, There are many excelant roller fanciers that now have the opportunity to show what they have In national competition,, The NBRC fall fly will bring In even more good flyers out of Baltimore, New jersey and the Burroughs Of New York City,, The Bronx, Harlem and  Brooklyn,, Where roller flying has all ways been strong,, But without representation,, these fanciers were left to their own Inner city competitions,, It did my heart good to see the excitement and energy from the competitors as we traveled from loft to loft,, They made It happen,, The weather played an Important role In how this competition turned out,, I had seen good kits and kits with a lot of potential for the future, The attitude with these roller fanciers was where Its supposed to be,, I want to thank you all for making my stay worth the trip,, Joe T

Fly Report

First of all I would like to thanks Dave and Yolanda Szabatura for being such gracious host. There hospitality was above and beyond any standards. Dave I also wanted to thank your for all the driving you did, a lot of time and miles bud. During the 5 days that my wife and I were there, there wasn’t a dull moment.
I also wanted to say to all the guys that flew in the region. Thank you all, seen some excellent birds and some great flyers. Everyone in this region deserves a pat on the back. Because at any given time either one of you can be at the top.
I’m going to do something a little different I am going to post my best of and then the scores:

Winning Kit: Dave Szabatura
Best individual bird: Dave Szabatura a yellow check white flight and Bert Schweigert a red check self.
Deepest Kit: Bert Schweigert
Most impressive kit to judge: Bert Scheigert, Great Valley N.Y Kit had a nice depth for the entire kit. Easy to score and some really good quality.
Most Bizarre: Tom Duger, Hannibal N.Y. Had a roller dropping deep and On the last spin acted like it passed out or died and landed in the pond. I don’t know if he ever found it or not.

North Central East    Judge Dave Goss

2004 World Cup
It was an honor to be invited to judge your region. Your warm hospitality made my trip most enjoyable.  I would like to thank everyone that took care of me along the way.  Dave Goss

I would like to add a couple comments.  I was happy that our region was able to show Dave some excellent kits.  For a while it didn’t look like that would happen.  The weather prevented some fine kits from being able to show their stuff.  Several flyers put their kits up in wind and/or rain that simply destroyed any chance they had of scoring.  Enough whining about the weather.  The best thing about our regional fly: Dave Goss.  As many already know, Dave is an exceptionally knowledgeable roller man and an exceptional human being.  Thanks Dave.  The honor was all ours.   Devoe Manning

Dave Gehrke ask me to judge the North Central West region a couple of years ago and finally I agreed.  I did not know what I was in for.  My 2-hour flight turned into a 12-hour marathon getting to Minnesota.  Once I got there I met lots of fine roller fliers.  These fliers are dedicated to the hobby and know how to treat a judge right.  I enjoyed myself and would not hesitate to go back again.  We did travel a lot of miles but the roller conversations in the car made the traveling very easy.  I saw some nice kits and some good birds while I was there.  I want to thank Dave Gehrke, Ron Moon. Mel Stalzer, Harold Ryan, Tom Akeson, John Johnson, Brian Brueggemeier, and Dick Kollmann for feeding me or putting me up for the night and driving me all over the place.   Thank you for the opportunity to meet everybody and see some good birds.

2004 WORLD CUP REGIONAL FLY DENMARK.

Finding a date for our Qualifier was not easy, as April and May are busy months because there is allways a family member or friend that is having a Conformation, to go to, it is a big thing here in Denmark. Anyway we agreed to have the fly on the 8th & 9th of May and take it from there.

We were to start at Edin Kozarcanin, but due to a misunderstanding Edin did not have enough birds to fly, we used to fly 12 birds in our local competions, so Edin only had 12 birds the rest where in the breeding loft.

So off we went to Poul Christensen, Poul flew a kit of early bred young birds, they flew slow and with a good fly pattern but most of the action was just tumbling, they need more time to develop.

Next flyer was Egon Nielsen, Egon released his kit in ideal weather, overcast with a little breeze, the birds were active the first 5 mins then they just went flat, his neighbours racing pigeons did not help matters.

Then it was off to Borge Jensen, Borge also had good weather conditions, birds flew at a good height and they were active but they were just mucking about, they lacked quality and depth to score more.

Last flyer of the day was Jorgen Hansen, it has been awhile since I last saw Jorgen`s birds and he flew a nice kit, they flew at a good height, some times a little low, there was a little brz cheq badge hen that was coming deep, she nearly hit the roof a couple of times, the kit was working, a lot of following thru but also some nice breaks, lost a couple of breaks because of out birds.

The next day we met at Ferid Catak`s, Ferid has been looking after his brother in laws birds, Ferid Sabic who was in Bosnia visiting family, Ferid Sabic has just moved to a new house so he  now has his lofts on the same allotments but on the other side from Ferid Catak, so we went over and released Ferid Sabic`s kit, the birds are settled in at the new place but today they decided to go and revisit the old place and there they flew for an hour, we went back to Ferid Catak`s loft and waited for the other kit to come back and land, the kit did come back and some birds did land but there was still about 10 to 12 birds flying around, we had waited 3 hours in all and time was now getting on, so Ferid Catak had to release his kit, everything went well the first 5 mins or so and then the inevitable happened the 2 kits clashed, there were birds all over the place, they did not fly as one kit, there was nothing we could do but push on.

Next flyer was Jorgen Rosengreen, Jorgen released his kit and they started off well and then they started to fly low and dart fast around the house tops, the weather was OK, needless to say that Jorgen was at a loss as to why, they have never done it before.

Last to fly was yours truly Eric Laidler, the weather was OK and the kit flew at a good height, the birds worked the first 10 mins, here again alot of following thru and individual rolling, then they just went quiet for the next 10 mins.

The following flyer`s could not fly.

Hans Sorensen phoned on the morning of the fly to say that he could not fly due to family commitments.

Just a couple of weeks before the fly Svend Nielsen,Steen Christensen and Ingemann Sorensen had all lost birds due to the mist, this mist is treacherous, you can release the birds in a clear blue sky and then the mist just rolls in under them and covers the ground like a blanket, the birds do not have a chance.

Kristian Jonasen and Hasim Smakic also phoned in to say they could not fly, Hasim had to take his son to play football and Kristian had to work.

Again our thanks to Henning Pedersen for judging,

Hilsen Eric Laidler.

Hawk on the prowl and heat rising.

8. Robert Parker – 20 birds – 20 minutes – 1.1 Q x 1.0 D – Score 53.9

The heat was rising and the birds went really high and flew into the sun.

I could not access the quality and depth well enough to award any more.

A couple of breaks were very high up and directly in the sun.

I just couldn’t count them properly on those breaks. It was all I could do to see them circling the sun at that heigth.

9. Sal Ortiz – 19 birds – 19 minutes – 1.0 Q x 1.0 D – Score 10

11. Randy Gibson – 19 birds – 20 minutes – 1.0 Q x 1.2 D – Score 30

The wind was blowing too hard. Randy waited until it was very dim and becoming dark and it still blew.

I couldn’t see the birds good enough to allow any more Q and D.

What I did manage to see well when they first came out was not the best rolling due to wind and flying low.

I had a great time and want to thank all those who flew and spent time on the fly such as Marshall Duncan

who did an excellent job of coordinating the fly, also Big John Destout for taking me in and hauling me around the whole fly,

except for a short time spent with Jerry Higgins.

A big Thanks to Randy Gibson who put on a BBQ that was outstanding in every way,

the view, his lovely wife and home was opened to us all.

I was hoping the weather was going to be good for the lads in the hull region, the last few years there have 30-mile hour winds. The fly started at Barry Shackletons, the weather was perfect, a slight breeze and clear sky's. Barry’s released the first off his 2 kits he was flying, the birds lifted very quick to fast for 2 of the birds who stay out off the kit and dropped after 11 minutes, not a good start to the day. Next to fly was Peter larvin, after the usual cup off tea Pete put up a kit of 20 old birds, the kit worked very well for the first 8 minutes butt missed a lot off breaks with having out birds, the kit still scored 113.23 points. Next on the list was Eddy Mahoney. Eddy’s kit lifted high and where off the clock for the full 5minutes, the kit was very quite only scoring 1 break off 5.with a short trip to Ron Norris, Ron’s birds scored 1 break off 6 before dropping after 12 minutes. Mark hunter was the next flyer, mark released a kit off 17 yearlings, the kit flew at a good judging height, the birds started well scoring 4 breaks in the first 7 minutes then went quite. After a lunch break myself and Barry returned to marks house to fly his wife's kit, Sarah was very nerves, Sarah released a kit off 19 birds, the kit come out looking like there where going to knock up a big score, yet again the kit went quite after 9 minutes after scoring 9 breaks, at least she beat her husband’s score. Peter larven ‘s son was next to fly, the kit started very well scoring 3 breaks in the first 2 minutes, the kit lifted very high, 2 birds dropped after 13 minutes. Back to eddy’s Mahoney hoping for a better show out of this kit, the kit scored 2 breaks, then out birds stopped the kit from scoring. Gary Templeman was next to fly, Gary's kit started very well, scoring some good breaks, looking like there where going to score really well. Then the kit came down to low for them to score any breaks. Last to fly was Barry Shackleton, Barry released his kit and within a minute the birds went to high to judge. I really enjoyed judging the competition; maybe the weather was to good for the men and women off hull as most off the kits lifted to high.
Congratulations to Peter Larven, on winning the east Yorkshire region and I wish you all the best in the finale Pete. I would like to congratulate Barry on a job well done as regional director, the whole fly went as smooth as clockwork. Thank you to mark, Sarah, Peter. Ron, Gary and Barry for there company around the competition.
Yours in sport and friendship Peter Harper.

 Northwest International    Judge Dave Szabatura

 by Dave Szabatura

It was a great honor to be asked to judge the 2004 Northwest International Fly/Northwest World Cup Regional Fly.  The Northwest International Fly gave birth to the World Cup and it was a thrill being able to judge this prestigious competition.
I had never been to the Northwest before and the scenery was breath-taking and the people were fantastic.  I especially want to thank my host Ivan Hanchett and his wonderful wife Kani.  They are great people and good friends of mine.  Ivan is one of the top roller men in this country and he is an encyclopedia of roller knowledge.  Kani flew in her first World Cup competition.  She has really caught the roller bug and she has a very good teacher to help her along.  Thanks guys for taking such good care of me, I had a blast!
I also want to thank Brian Krog and his wife Leanne, for putting us up in their lovely home in Canada.  They have a wonderful place and they made us feel right at home.
Casey Strzelewicz won the Northwest International Fly and Ivan Hanchett came in second place.  Casey and Ivan both qualified for the World Cup finals from their region, and just missing was Brian Felty in third place.  The top 3 flyers all flew well managed kits, which were frequent, broke together well, and flew at a good height for their entire fly.  These 3 guys definitely distanced themselves from the pack.  Here are the final scores:
Casey Strzelewicz --- (20 birds) 5-7-5-5-7-9-7-5-7-5-6-5 / 8-10-8-9-13-5-5 / 7-5-7-6-8-9-5 =      201 raw x 1.5 Q x 1.4 D = 422.1 total (Qualified for finals)
  • This was a fun kit to watch.  Good action during the entire fly.  Lost some breaks on out birds.  Kit almost DQ’d when second bird landed in tree at 15 minutes 2 seconds.
Ivan Hanchett --- (19 birds) 7-5-6-9-5-7-5-5-6-6-5 / 5-8-6-8-6-7-7 / 8-6-5-9-5-6-5-8 / 5-8-6 =    184 raw x 1.4 Q x 1.3 D = 334.88 total (Qualified for finals)
  • Nice solid active kit.  I saw this same kit fly 2 days later and they did at least twice as good as on fly day.  This kit could do well in finals.
Brian Felty --- (15 birds) 7-5-5-5-6-5-5-7-5-5-5-6-5 / 5-5-6-5-5-10 / 5-6-6-5 / 5-6 =                    150 raw x 1.4 Q x 1.4 D = 294 total
  • This was a good kit with strong breaks.  This was a well managed kit that, because of falcon losses, was down to the bare minimum 15 birds.  A few more breaks would have put him in the finals.
Gary Stephens --- (18 birds) 5-5-7-5-5-5-5 / 5-5-6-7 / 8-7-7 / 8-7 = 97 raw x 1.4 Q x 1.3 D = 176.54 total
  • Kit got scared up out of judging height by a redtail hawk, 3 minute time-out taken.  Many 3 to 4 bird breaks hurt score.
Ken Westlund --- (18 birds) 6-5-5-7-5 / 5-5-6-5 / 5-7-5 / 5 = 71 raw x 1.2 Q x 1.3 D = 110.76 total
  • Kit flew a good pattern.  Too many waterfalls caused by birds breaking from back of kit.
Jack Smith --- (19 birds) 5-5-5-6-5 / 5-5-5-5 / 5 / 6-5 = 62 raw x 1.3 Q x 1.2 D = 96.72 total
  • There was a Blue Check and a Red Check that were very good.
Aaron Johnson --- (18 birds) 5-5-6-5-7 / 5 / 6-5 / 5-6 = 55 raw x 1.3 Q x 1.3 D = 92.95 total
  • Had the best performing, individual Neibel birds that I saw on this trip.  Too many waterfalls caused by birds breaking from back of kit.
Les Bilyeau --- (20 birds) 5-5-7-5-5 / 7-5-5 /  / 5 = 49 raw x 1.3 Q x 1.3 D = 82.81 total
  • Birds flew too high to judge for half of fly.
Linne Rose --- (20 birds) 8-6-5-6-7 /  /  / = 32 raw x 1.4 Q x 1.4 D = 62.72 total
  • Good speed and depth, but birds skied out and had 2 out-birds for most of fly.
Dan Applebury --- (20 birds) 5-5-8-5 / 5-5-5-5 / 5-5 / 5 = 58 raw x 1.0 Q x 1.0 D = 58 total
  • Minimum quality and depth to score.  Birds need to break together better.
Dan Ouellette --- (17 birds) 7-5-5 /  / 5-5 / 5 = 32 raw x 1.3 Q x 1.3 D = 54.08 total
  • Lost 4 breaks on out-birds, one bird was in tree at time-in.
Harry Pappagallo --- (19 birds) 5-5-5 /  /  / = 15 raw x 1.2 Q x 1.2 D = 21.6 total
  • Birds skied out of judging range after 5 minutes.  Hawks soaring in area.
Phil Pauu --- (17 birds)  /  / 5 / 5 = 10 raw x 1.2 Q x 1.1 D = 13.2 total
  • A busy kit that needs to work together better.  Birds need more depth.
H.C. Martin --- (17 birds)  / 5 /  /  = 5 raw x 1.3 Q x 1.3 D = 8.45 total
  • Stiff kit that had only one break.
Darrel Norris --- (16 birds) 6 /  /  /  = 6 raw x 1.1 Q x 1.1 D = 7.26 total
  • One bird flew away at start.  Birds never got together.
Gary Stephens (2nd kit) --- (18 birds) Zero
  • Birds were stiff right from release, with a couple cocks clapping for entire fly.
Brian Krog --- (20 birds) Zero
  • Birds flew fast in hawk-mode for entire fly.  Only one bird rolled during fly.
Bob Hill --- (20 birds) 5 /  /   D.Q. at 14 min
  • Birds flew in defensive mode.
Al Hunt --- (20 birds) 5 /  /  D.Q. at 12 min
  • Had some deep, fast birds.  Kit never got together good.
Larry Racine --- (20 birds) 5 / 5 /  D.Q. at 12 min
  • Good kitting, promising young birds.
Pete Kaufman --- (20 birds) 5-6-7-5-5-5-7  D.Q. at 9 min
  • Some very good spinners in this group.  Out-birds lost 3 breaks.
Kani Hanchett --- (17 birds)  D.Q. at 6 min
  • Some promising birds in this group of young birds.
Brad Santos --- (20 birds) 6 /  D.Q. at 6 min
  • One bird out from start.
Herman Seftan --- (17 birds) 6 /  D.Q. at 5 min
  • Some good individual birds.  Birds never got up.
Mitch Reed --- (20 birds) D.Q. at time-in
  • These were 2 to 3 month old birds just starting to roll.  3 birds in tree at time-in.
Ken Westlund (2nd kit) ---  D.Q. at time-in
  • Had less than 15 birds to fly at time-in.

By: - Paul A. Lee (European Coordinator)
Paul Lee, yours truly, was the first to fly in the 2004 World Cup qualifying round for the Central and South Regions.
The judge for this year, George Frost had arrived at my house the afternoon before the fly, after a four and a half hour trip from Middlesbrough, his van having broken down on the way. I should have been there to meet George but work had changed my shift to afternoons, so I didn’t get home till 9pm. I had arranged for my mate Pete Petravicius to be at my house to keep George company until I got home.
It was my tenth year of running the World Cup in England and I was looking forward to it even more as I was flying first and had been able to fly and feed my birds ready for the competition. I am usually away on the fly and it is around three to four days before I get home to fly my kit, which means it’s usually potluck on how they perform.
Saturday morning at 0530hrs and I’m out of bed to make the lads some sausage and tomato cobs for breakfast. I opened the bedroom curtains and I couldn’t believe it, thick mist and heavy drizzle. After a couple of cups of tea and some snap we went down to the pigeon loft for the 0700hrs start, still in the mist and drizzle.
Out went the birds at 0700hrs and the kit hit the sky, but it was a complete waste of time with the mist level at around 30 feet above the house roofs. The birds flew low but I must say they flew a perfect figure of eight with a lovely wing beat and tight kiting but too low to work. They put a couple of halfhearted breaks in but most of the time they were not interested.
So it was cases in the boot of the car and out on the road for Aston on Trent, to judge Trevor Slater’s kit. Trevor’s kit was released at 0820hrs in slight drizzle but a much higher ceiling, so the birds lifted to a good rolling height. The kit put three good breaks in over 10 but out birds spoilt the kits performance. This was the first time we have judged kits to the World Cup scoring system, so I was expecting lost scores because of out birds, as we don’t penalise a kit with out birds in England as we have 20 kiting points to play with.
Next to fly was George Mason who lives right at the side of the river Trent at Swalkston, what a fantastic place to fly rollers. George was not at home because of work commitments but a good friend of his, Gordon Forbes (Fadge) was there to release his kit. The kit was released at 0900hrs in good flying conditions, blue sky with a little cloud cover. The birds flew low over the fields which made the breaks too loose to be scored, the birds knew that if they balled up at that height they would hit the deck. Then all of a sudden a big black Crow flew under the kit and it put the shits up them and they began to lift. As soon as they settled down they began to score with a total of 8 breaks. This kit also suffered loss of breaks with two out birds.
It was back in the motor and off to Sean Fearns to see what his kit could do, Sean released his kit at 1005hrs in good flying conditions. The birds worked well for the first 10 minutes, putting in 7 good breaks, two of which were 18 and 14. Only three more breaks were put in over the last 10 minutes, which was a real pity. After time was called Sean put on food and drink for all, which was greatly appreciated. Thanks Sean.
Andy Bainbrigge was next to fly on the agenda over at Melbourne. At the bottom of Andy’s garden you go through a gate onto some allotments over looking a valley, another fantastic area to fly rollers. The kit was released at 1130hrs and hit the sky; they kited well and were very frequent in the roll but too active to get it together. Once again flying low over the valley caused some loose rolling which couldn’t be scored. Who said the judge couldn’t be bribed!! The beer was great Andy.
We all piled into our cars once more and set off on the road to Kevin Wilkinson’s at Hartshorne. I was looking forward to seeing this kit, as Kevin always seems to get it right on fly day with his birds. They were released at 1215hrs and showed their promise straight off. The kit put a total of 24 breaks in, of which 7 of those were breaks of 10 plus. Odd times we had two out birds but it didn’t harm the final score, of a very active, quality kit of rollers.
This is where we left the main group of fanciers behind, as we were on our way to Peter Stripp’s at Northampton. Myself, George Frost, Steve McGlory and John Wright set off down the M1 south towards Northampton. I was looking forward to seeing Pete’s birds again as I hadn’t seen them for around three years, due to Pete moving house and not flying in competition. Previous years Pete had always won through to the National Championships with his birds, so it was fingers crossed for a good show. Pete’s kit was released at 1445hrs, and straight away showed their potential. The kit lifted too high and at a distance at one point, so they were off the clock for 2 minutes. This was also another kit that two out birds damaged the final score but the quality and depth were fantastic, 1.7 x 1.6, best of the competition. Pete laid on some food for us all, which was more than welcome. Thanks Pete.
Their’s no rest for the wicked as they say, so it was back in the motor and on the road over to John Wright’s on the fens, at Earith. John’s birds were out at 1645hrs, and when the birds came out they sounded like a flock of Swan’s taking off from water, the wing noise was that loud. It turned out John had left his drinker lids off and the birds had had a good bath in them. One bird dropped at 1 minute and out birds stopped John’s kit from putting any score on the sheet.
Back in the motor and off again to Steve McGory’s place at Warboys. Steve released his kit at 1805hrs in good flying weather, but two birds just didn’t want to play the game and landed early at 4 minutes on the clock, so that was that. Steve’s was the last kit of the day and we were staying at Steve’s for the night. Steve and his wife looked after us really well, with a big fish and chip supper; mine was that big it still had the harpoon in it!! After a few beers and watching a video I had taken of last years National Championships it was time to hit the sack. They put me in a room the furthest away from anyone else as they say I snore like a pig. I’ve never heard myself, but it must be bad because when Monte Neable and me shared a room at George Kitson’s place at Middlesbrough, Monte dragged his mattress down stairs into the living room because of my snoring. Monte said the next morning he had thrown shoes at me but I still kept it up all night. Monte and George two of the greats who will always be missed.
Day two, up at 0600hrs, a cup of tea and toast at Steve’s and we were away again to Cambridge to see Mick Manser’s birds. Mick released his kit at 0810hrs in good conditions and they flew a nice pattern at a good height, but the birds didn’t want to work. Only one break was recorded for the 20-minute fly.
The other flyer in Cambridge was Les Dodd’s, whose kit was released at 0905hrs. This kit turned out to be a very active kit of rollers, but just missing out on big breaks because of the birds following through. Les had one out bird for most of the fly, which didn’t help matters but all in all, a very good kit of rollers to watch.
At this point we said our farewells to Steve, as we had a four-hour drive across country to the home of one of the greats, John Lenihan, at Paulton just outside Bristol. John’s kit went out at 1310hrs in good condition and flew a nice pattern, but again two out birds stopped any score and with two birds landing at 12 minutes that was John’s fly ended until next year. We went inside and John’s wife had some food and drink ready for us, which we got tucked into. Thanks to you both.
Refreshed and ready for the road once more, we said our good byes and headed for the M6 to make our way to Childswickham to the loft of Gordon Daffurn. This was another flyer that I was keeping my fingers crossed for, weather wise. Over the last 4 years Gordon has bad weather, to say the least in the World Cup, strong winds and rain. I have seen his birds no more than a couple of feet above the fields trying to make their way home in the gale force winds. It  worked, we arrived at Gordon’s in perfect flying conditions, so out the birds went at 1620hrs. The kit was a dream to watch, with 23 breaks and 7 of them over 10, with good quality and depth. A very active and class act which would be hard to beat.
Kit number two was released at 1650hrs and Gordon said he fancied the yearling kit even more than the old bird kit he had just flown. Sadly this didn’t happen due to the birds flying on one wing for the full 20 minutes. We were stopping at Gordon’s that night so me and George wandered down to the local village pub for a couple of nightcaps. Up early next morning and a good breakfast inside our bellies and it was on the road once more for day three of the competition. Thanks for the hospitality Gordon.
Back on the M6 north, to the home of the roller, Birmingham. Our first port of call was at Paul Williams’s loft. Paul’s kit went out at 0825hrs in a slight haze, which caused the birds not to lift, stopping more breaks being scored.
From Paul’s it was onto Neville Hackett’s whose kit was hit, hard by a team of racers, which put them right off their stride. They made the birds fly on one wing for the full 20 minutes not putting up any score.
Tony Bagley was next on the flysheets; he also lived in the Birmingham area, The Black Country. Tony released his kit at 0940hrs in better conditions and his kit worked well at first, then the two dreaded out birds cost him four real good big breaks of over 10 birds. Tony’s wife had tea and sausage sandwiches ready for us all when the fly was completed. Thanks to you both.
Last but not least in the Birmingham area we made our way to the loft of Terry Harper. Terry was waiting for us at his place because he was off work suffering with a bad back. He liberated his kit at 1045hrs and they lifted well and flew a good pattern, changing wing over the valley, what a lovely sight. The kit put in 20 breaks of which 6 were 10 and over, a very active kit and a pleasure to watch. After a cold drink and a piece of cake it was back onto the M5 to the next stop just out side Crewe to the loft of George Burgess. Sorry Terry I forgot to take your photo.
We arrived at George Burgess’s at just after 1300hrs and his kit was put out at 1310hrs. The kit flew well, and was very active but not rolling together, so only one break was scored. George filled us up with food and drink, which was enough to last us a month. George decided to follow us to the next two flyers, so off we all set towards Kinsley Holt and the home of Peter Handy.
We arrived at Pete’s at 1445hrs in perfect flying conditions, so I was hoping for great things from Pete’s kit, and we were not disappointed. The kit went out at 1450hrs and started to crank up the score, 7 breaks of over 10, which could have been more, but for the dreaded two out birds. The kit held it together long enough to take the lead off Gordon Daffurn’s kit.
From Pete’s we went over the top’s, which is about 2000 feet above sea level, and we ran into one hell of a thunderstorm. The rain was lashing down like stair rods, running down the road in torrents like a river.
We arrived at Morris Barwick’s to sunshine and blue skies, what a change. Morris is another flier who suffers with bad flying condition regularly, where he lives in Dove Holes. This was the first time I had been to Morris’s and had good weather. So out they went and worked well until spooked by a Peregrine Falcon, but they still managed 18 breaks. When we left Morris’s we saw the Peregrine coming back over as we pulled out of the drive for the next destination.
Another long drive over to the Wirral, to the loft of Paul Sisson’s, better known as “Birdshit Lofts” which was the last port of call for the day. It was 1925hrs by the time we released Paul’s kit, into a lovely evening sky. The birds started well then went flat and two birds landed at 13 minutes, so that was it for Paul’s kit. We went inside as we were sleeping at Paul’s and his wife had a full beef dinner laid on for us all, which was fantastic, thanks to you both. After dinner we sat talking rollers and downed a few brandy and cokes, just for medicinal purposes you understand!!!
John Heague should have flown before Paul, but we were told his wife had had a baby early and both were in hospital with a few problems. So from all of the roller fraternity I would like to say, hope all goes well with you and all the family John.
Day four, over to Trevor Weaver’s place at Warrington, for the first kit of the day. Trev’s kit hit the sky at 0810hrs and put in 18 breaks with 3 breaks of 10 and over. Some good quality birds were seen in this kit. Trev’s wife put on tea and sandwiches for us all after the fly. Thanks to you both.
Next it was a few streets down the road to Trev’s brothers loft Ken Weaver. When we arrived at Ken’s, Trev’s birds had drifted over our way so we had to wait awhile until the birds  dropped. Here at Ken’s we saw a kit of real good quality, which just missed out on bigger breaks but still put in a total of 26 breaks. One out bird spoilt the kit but didn’t loose Ken any points. After another cup of tea at Ken’s we were on our way to Wigan.
We arrived at Wayne Grove’s in Wigan and he released his kit at 1045hrs. They started well until four racers hit them and scragged the all over the sky. Hard Luck Wayne.
It was the over to Coppull to Ronnie Hale’s loft for the next kit to fly. Ronnie put up a kit of very active young birds which put in 13 breaks in nice style. A kit to look out for in the All England Championships in August.
Pete Lynam was the next competitor to fly at Heywood, a new face in the roller game, who has only been fling birds for a couple of years. I had seen his birds once before the previous year. Out the kit came at 1320hrs, and what a show they put on for us all, 30 breaks in total, with 6 breaks of 10 and over, we had a new leader. Well done Pete.
The last flier of the day was Steve Buckley out at Oldham. Steve’s birds hit the sky at 1420hrs but after a full 5 minutes off the clock they still get it together and were split all over the sky in two kits for 10 minutes. Once they did pull together they put in six breaks but by this time it was too late.
We left Steve’s and dropped onto the M62 to go overland to Bradford for our last port of call that day. We were stopping at Eddie Bayne’s place for the night; Eddie’s wife Janet put us on a lovely stew in a giant Yorkshire pudding. We talked roller for a while but we were both tired out so we hit the sack early.
It was up early once more for the final day of the fly, Janet had cooked us a big breakfast, The Full Monty!!
Eddie’s kit lifted well and they began to clock up a score. The birds put in a total of 18 breaks, but would have done much better if they had changed wing pattern as they flew on one wing for the full 20 minutes.
The next competitor to fly should have been Mark Cranney, but he was suffering with a bad disease in his loft and had lost many of his flying and stock birds to it. Hope all is well with the birds now Mark.
So it was onto Phil Ahmed’s place the final stop in Bradford. The lad’s in Bradford are a great bunch of fanciers, always having a laugh and taking the piss out of each other. Phil came up to me and asked for some advice about a bird of his that had rolled down between the houses and caught it’s legs on the house wall and he thought they may be broken and should he kill the bird. I told him to put a couple of wheels on its legs and give it his kids to play with. Brum!! Brum!! I have got a mother and father no matter what Phil says. Phil’s kit was out at 0850hrs, but out birds again spoilt another kit with only two scoreable breaks being put in. Phil had some real sharp and very fast rollers in his kit.
Our next stop was over in Leeds at the home of Alan Hamilton. Alan’s birds were put up at 0950hrs in good flying conditions and they started to work really well. This was another kit that seemed to want to only fly on the one wing most of the time but when they did change wing they put in most of their 24 breaks. I would have liked to have seen this team fly the figure of eight, what a show that would have been. Sorry Alan I forgot to take your photo.
After a cup of tea and biscuits it was off once more to our last port of call and the last fliers of the day and competition in Leicester to Dave Moseley and Ian Baines. These two kits should have been flown on the first day but Dave was away in America judging a World Cup qualifier in California so I put them at the end of the fly to give them time to get the birds out for a couple of flies, as Dave didn’t get home until the Friday, the day before the start of the fly.
Dave flew his first kit at his place at 1320hrs and his team split, and he also had out birds for most of the 20 minutes fly, so only one break was scored. Good quality and depth was seen in this kit of rollers.
The second kit was released at Ian’s place at 1425hrs and the same thing happened here, they were off the clock for the full 5 minutes before they had to go on. They never seemed to get it together though but again good quality and depth was seen. Better luck next year boys. And yes that, is Dave smiling
Well as a final note on the fly, it turned out well weather wise for all but me, but that’s how the cookie crumbles as they say. I have always said that in any roller competition to win you need good birds, good weather, and a sprinkling of luck.
This being the first time George Frost had judged a fly with the multiplier and out bird rule, George was to say the least a bit dubious about the scoring system. I myself had already judge the system with Pete Harper when we both went over to South Africa to judge their qualifier for them and both me and Pete had felt the same way. I must say that by the end of the competition we were both converts and had seen the light.
The two out bird rule had lost points for quite a few competitors but in the end when we are training young birds the fist thing we look for is bad kitting and cull those birds, so why do we still put up with old birds out of the team? Over the past ten years since I have been on every National and World Cup Fly the kitting of our birds has got steadily worse from what I have observed.  I would like to see in the near future the English fliers adopting this scoring method as this system of scoring would force us to get rid of those drifters out the kit.
The multiplier for quality and depth works real well from what we have both seen, as a bird that rolls with good quality deserves more points because that is what we are supposed to be striving for in the end. So a bird that holds that same good quality for a greater depth deserves those extra points.
The 200 quality points we use in the National Championships in England is fine if it is used to it’s full potential but not many judges do this and as a consequence, active and only just scoreable teams outstrip solid rolling teams because of this.
The thing that proved the depth and quality factor to me and George was the team of Peter Stripp’s. Pete’s team scored 8 breaks totalling a raw score of 94 which was times by 1.7 for quality and 1.6 for depth, giving a grand total of, 94 x 1.7 x 1.6 which equals 255.64. A well deserved score for top quality and deep rolling kit of birds.
The same team to National Flying Rules would have scored the same 94 raw score and maybe 16 for kitting with about 80 point for quality from the way I have seen most judges’ score. This would give a grand total of 190 points, which is 55.68 less than the World Cup system. This 55.68 is 11 breaks more which hopefully would have taken Pete’s kit above an active only just scoreable team using the World Cup Rules.
Both myself and George after talking about the competition think that the World Cup system is the only way to go if we want to improve our birds in this country. There’s some food for thought!!!
Well it only remains for me to say a big thank you to George Frost for doing a great job on the fly, and thanks once again to all of you who fed watered and put us both to bed.
Next year will be my last World Cup in this country, as I am leaving to Live in Northern Cyprus, so I hope someone will take over the running of the World Cup as I think it is by far the best fly of the year. Hopefully I will be over in England in the future to judge some competitions if asked.
The Turkish Cypriots are pigeon lovers like most Turks, so hopefully I may be able to get a club set up in Cyprus and fly the World Cup from there. The sign on my loft must be an omen, as it was made for me and stands for The Nottingham Competition Roller Club but could now stand for The Northern Cyprus Roller Club!!!
Well that’s all folks.
All the best from us both and Keep ‘Em Flying.
